Means: DEVOTEE
Genre(s): Hardcore
Formed in Recife - PE, 1988. Devotees The band was formed in 1988 by a Cannibal ( bass and vocals ) , the Neilton (guitar ) and Celo Brown ( batereia ) under the name " Devotees of Hate" which was taken from the title of a book by José Louzeiro (1987 ) ( Teles 2000:244 ) . Louzeiro is the novelist , journalist and writer whose book ? Childhood of the Dead? about the life of a child living on the street, was brought to film in 1981 in the critically acclaimed film " Pixote " by Hector Babenco . The group had and still has its base in low-income and also has abundant social problems where many people work to improve their neighborhood that lies in the hills of Recife , called Alto José do Pinho . In 2000 the group changed its name to " Devotees " . When MTV began captured in Recife , the signal could be received clearly in the Upper Joseph Pine , future members of the Devotees have listened to punk rock and bands like The Smiths and The Cure with the punk rock of São Paulo . Knew the traditional genres that bands like Chico Science and Zombie Nation logo to incorporate their sounds , but were interested in playing a hardcore style rock . ( Teles 2000:248 ) . Members of devotees embraced the ethic of "do it yourself " punk rock . The Neilton guitarist explained to me in 2001 as he manufactured his first guitar and amplifier which included the arm and the body of the guitar , and how touched for a long time without anyone noticing it had not been purchased at a music store . The Neilton creativity extends to the cover art of the CD 'S band and the design of your web site . The band manufactures cases for their instruments and the offices of their amplifiers , and buy only what they can not do themselves . This, anyway , is not done with a sense of grace . Rather, Neilton say? ... I'm not so angst . Gives me pleasure and pride to have it done and have my art to look at, see my work accomplished , the idea held . Neilton was able to buy Fender and Gibson Les Paul guitars and Marshall amplifiers since the band became known but he still felt the need to play with people's perceptions of brands . And bought a cheap electric guitar and removed everything including the frets reform it to your own style by calling it with the name " Robson " and began using it in their shows. Soon people were admiring their sound and asking where they could buy one.
Among the obstacles the band faced in its early years were the police , the prosecution and the non-approval of the residents of your district elect its musical style . The Alto José do Pinho neighborhood was home to " caboclinhos " and " maracatu groups " that were important at the carnival . The media image of rock bands it referred to the youth of the middle class . When the devotees began to have press coverage this was due in part to see a disjointed perception group of young people from lower class doing hardcore - punkrock ( Teles 2000:251 ) . Over time the relationship of the band with the community has improved since demonstrated its commitment to the same attracting abundant press attention for many other bands there and drive the foundation of a Non Governmental Organization ( NGO ) called Speaker ( a game of words , with "High" your neighborhood in Recife ) , which carries cultural and social projects .
